What is PET/CT?

PET/CT Imaging combines detailed pictures of your body’s internal structure (anatomy) and the functioning of the body’s cells (metabolism). The combination of these two elements enables doctors to procure a unique image that helps them identify tumors and other changes in your body with remarkable precision.

What PET/CT Reveals

This ultra-modern scanner can identify extremely small cancer cells throughout the body, reveal the stage of the cancer, and show if (and where) it has spread. However, its capabilities extend well beyond oncology.

It may also be used to determine the success of the current treatment or to differentiate dementia from Alzheimer’s disease.

What to Expect During Your PET/CT Scan

Here’s what to expect when you visit Eisenhower Imaging Center:

  • Arrival and Discussion: A technologist will discuss the procedure and address your questions.
  • Blood Sugar Test: Your blood sugar will be checked for accuracy.
  • Oral Contrast: You may be asked to consume an oral contrast barium solution to enhance imaging.
  • IV Placement: An IV line will be inserted for a safe, radioactive sugar injection.
  • Quiet Waiting: In order to allow the material to circulate, you will be instructed to sit quietly and without engaging in any movements.
  • Bladder Emptying: You must use the restroom before the scan.
  • Scan Procedure: Lie still on a moving bed during the scan, which may take 30 to 60 minutes.

The entire process may take about three hours and thus, it is advised to plan accordingly. Your comfort and well-being are our priority, so feel free to ask questions or share concerns.
